Backup And Restore Windows Home Server?

by MGD King Monday, December 21, 2009 9:12 PM

Back in June I set up a Windows Home Server (WHS) on my network out of the necessity of needing to backup the three machines that we have. Plus the laptop, with its paltry 20GB drive, just didn't have the space the kids needed for all of their pictures and music files so WHS just made too much sense given all that it does. The ability to store everyone's "My Documents" folder on the server plus the ability to share images, music, and videos on the network as well as a means to back up each machine daily were what sold me. I loved how easy it was to set up and how it basically took care of itself with little or no interaction required to keep things in order. And as an added bonus, the ability to log into the WHS from anywhere via a web interface made getting to our files painless when we're away from the house. Trust me, you don't know how much you would use that feature until you have it at your disposal! More...

Memorial Day

by MGD King Monday, May 25, 2009 7:50 AM

Memorial Day is regarded as the “unofficial beginning of summer”, but to me it’s a day where I can say thanks to all my service Brothers and Sisters who have given the ultimate price for this country. Yes, I know it’s cliché, but it fits because I wore that uniform for nearly 10 years and I am a Veteran of Desert Shield/Storm, so it’s something that I don’t take lightly. I may not talk about my military past much, but I wouldn’t have traded it for anything. Those 10 years helped shape me into what I am today, so thank you Veterans of the past, present, and future for standing up when called upon and defending freedom.

Slide.Show Now Online

by MGD King Thursday, January 29, 2009 9:08 AM

I’ve been looking for a way to display a gallery or slideshow of images that I’ve taken over the years here on my site and unfortunately BlogEngine.net doesn’t have one built in (yet). I started doing some research and found a really cool slideshow created by Vertigo and powered by Microsoft Silverlight, but getting it to work with BlogEngine.net seemed a little over my head as far as programming in .NET is concerned. Fortunately, Bill Beckelman created an extension for BlogEngine.net that allows you to publish the slideshow in a post, and someone posted on Bill’s blog on how the code could be modified so that the extension would work on a page instead of a post.

So that’s how my Slideshow came about. It’s just some pictures of my brother’s wedding and two trips to Bristol Motor Speedway for the NASCAR races. I’ll be adding more albums to it in the future as I figure out which pictures I want to post. The link is on the right under the Pages section, or you can just click here.

Thanks for taking a look!

Windows Live Writer and BlogEngine.net

by MGD King Wednesday, January 21, 2009 4:54 PM

As if BlogEngine.net wasn’t easy enough to use, I happened to stumble across a nifty little application that has a pretty good following in the blogging community called Windows Live Writer. Yes, I admit to being still “wet behind the ears” when it comes to blogging so excuse my excitement, but with this application I no longer need to log in to my blog and create a post. More...

Who Is MGD King?

MGD KingA lot of people ask me what does MGD King mean? Well, it was a nickname given to me because I used to drink large quantities of Miller Genuine Draft. Someone mentioned to me that I was the King of MGD, and so it stuck.
